Road kill and close calls

I thought I had killed one of those Bronze winged pigeons this morning as I was coming back from taking the teabags off the Borya plants. The silly birds are always sitting in the road and never take flight until you're right on top of them. This time a car going the other way startled it and it went under my car with a sickening thud, but I couldn't see it when I looked in the rear vision mirror. I got home (to collect my lunch that I had forgotten) only to discover it stuck behind the grill. I was contemplating what to do when I closed the boot and I heard loud rustling noises followed by the pigeon exiting from behind the grill like a shot from a gun. It disappeared in full flight towards next door's garden - I hope it was OK.

The goanna that one of the guys brought in for me today wasn't so lucky. It definitely came off worse when it collided with a car or whatever. Anyway I now have to decide whether or not to put it in the freezer at home for a while as we think it might be a Rosenberg's goanna, not recorded this far south before and I'd like someone to confirm the species. It won't keep well in this heat so I think the freezer might be required :-)

Matt had his elbow operated on last night and apart from the expected pain and some nausea he seems to be doing well. Erin brought him home today and he gets the back slab taken off next Wednesday and is then allowed to start using that arm. At the moment he has to hop around on one crutch. Hopefully only 2 or 3 weeks until he can get a shorter cast on his leg. Fingers crossed!
