The 2008 van der Peet Kris Kringle

This year the van der Peet Kris Kringle has purchased the following:

  • A Calf - A calf is a life-changing gift for a family in Vietnam. When fully grown it can help plough hard earth for crops which to feed the family. And, a bigger harvest means excess crop can be sold, so families can afford to send children to school. Plus, one day it can have a calf of its own to be passed onto another family. "Our parents had to rely on collecting bamboo shoots from the forests to feed us. Today, thanks to Oxfam's help, we're able to look forward to our children going to the local school, and maybe they'll be able to get professional jobs." Pho, Vietnam.
  • A Farmer's Pack - Livestock equals income, fertiliser and food. So it's not hard to see why the ultimate farmer's pack containing a goat, chicken, pig and manure can make such a difference to the budding farmer. This farmyard menagerie is a sure way to provide food for farming families, and much needed income. "Having goats has really improved our lives. They don't need any special food and very quickly become a source of income. They also breed very quickly and we can share them with others." Kamala Anruradhapura, Sri Lanka.
  • A School In A Box - This will give 80 children a temporary school during a time of emergency. In addition to the basic school supplies, such as exercise books, pencils, erasers and scissors, the kit also includes a wooden teaching clock, plastic cubes for counting, blackboard and a set of three laminated posters. Education is particularly valuable in emergency situations because it gives children a sense of normalcy.

Thanks to all the members of the van der Peet clan and other relatives who contributed this year.

(For those who aren't aware, rather than give presents to each other we pool the money that would have been used on gifts and purchase practical items for those in need.)

We hope that you all have a most enjoyable Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.
