When not to wear a sari

Tania had asked that all the ladies wear a sari to the wedding and had kindly arranged for a "sari draper" to come to the hotel and give us all a hand. I would have been happy to do my own sari (as I did for Rich's 40th) well Jen's sari really, but I needed to get my hair done as it was too hot to wear down. The girls decided that Jane and I should have our saris draped "Kandy" style and while it might look good if you are a size 8 Jane and I weren't convinced it was the most flattering result for us. I resisted the girls attempts to get me to wear a brown curly hair extension and so had to give in to the flowers, which they insisted coordinated with Jen's sari. I wasn't sure about the mauve eye shadow they insisted upon adding and they were shocked at my lack of bangles and obviously thought my attempts at wedding make-up were way too subdued. (Good job I wasn't the one getting married).

It was another very hot and humid day and eight metres of silk over a cotton blouse and petticoat felt like a lot of clothing - not a good time to wear a sari. This was further complicated by the fact that we had to cross the water from the beach to Taprobane Island when the tide was in which involved stepping off sand into a boat and then alighting onto a jetty from a wave affected boat - another good time to not wear a sari :-)

Frank found it a little difficult to get good photos of the wedding as the professional photographer and video maker kept getting in the way but here are a couple of reasonable photos.

When it was time to leave a lot of the girls decided that removing the sari and wading across in petticoat was preferable to getting in the boat again. Easier said that done however as the sari dressers had used an unbelievably large number of safety pins to secure everyone's sari. Jane almost managed to extricate herself and ended up with a new stylish way to wear a sari, she says she’s pretty sure this is really the right way :-)
