Thailand – fauna

One of the things I love about Thailand is the wildlife, especially the geckos and lizards. Here are a few pictures. Unfortunately I didn’t get a shot of either the huge monitor we saw while kayaking or the white-bellied sea eagle as we were a little wary of taking the new camera with us the first time.

We saw a large number of geckos hanging around on a sign that was lit with fluorescent lighting. I guess it must have been attracting the insects.

Denny (a local) told us that this little guy was a water monitor (water gecko perhaps?). He certainly looked to have webbed feet.

Check the lovely markings and the fancy serrated tail on this little guy.

The geckos we didn’t get a photo of were the two who decided to have a bit of a punch up above the dinner table one night on Koh Yao Noi. They lost their grip and almost ended up in my dinner. I wish I had realised what was happening sooner as I might have been able to pick one up before he recovered and ran off.

This is the best shot anyone managed to get of this little guy as the rainforest was rather dark here and we were getting eaten alive by the mossies.

Lizard

Interesting story behind this guy (monitor?). We were elephant trekking and the elephant that Frank and I were on didn’t seem too pleased to see him, and appeared to be trying to wave him away with his trunk. The upshot was she lost concentration and slipped and I half fell off dropping my handbag to the ground in the process. It flashed through my mind that I hoped I wouldn’t end up under the elephant as she was quite big. Sorry Phill but your sunnies which Air had given to us got broken in the fall.

When we went to Belize with Matt some years ago we saw some great baby Green Iguanas. This chap is a bit bigger and sadly a long way from home.

There were also a lot of frogs around but we didn’t see many. Phill managed to get a shot of this one.

Frog

There were a lot of water buffalo and goats on Koh Yao Noi including this little white one that was having a mad half hour as we rode past on the bikes.
